I'd been used to the site being slow, but it's been worse the last couple/few weeks and on mobile, ipad at least, forget about any images loading...

I'm sorry guys.
I reached out to Bluehost and aside from optimizing the databases, they didn't see anything they could do. Because the forum doesn't use Wordpress, they can't do much more.
I've reached out to my local, and only, tech support company. Hopefully they can take a look.

Just out of curiosity, you don't have it doing frequent backups, like hourly?
Also usage statistics might show if someones doing something untoward. like too much traffic from one person.
Just some ideas. I'll hit up my web guy tomorrow and see if he has any ideas

No frequent backups and not too much traffic.

I've hired someone to tweak and rewrite some of the plugins so in a few days, hopefully we'll see a change. For now the image plugin has been disabled so you have to click each individual image.
